MaiVuli
Maivuli is a passion project and educational technology platform designed to make learning more engaging for students in Fiji from Year 9 to Year 13. It combines a Learning Management System with game-like progression, helping students study core subjects such as Mathematics, Accounting, Economics, and Computing in a more interactive and rewarding way. The platform organizes learning content into Topics, Sub-topics, and Lessons, allowing students to move through their studies step by step. Each lesson includes learning material and mini-quizzes, while larger topic sections end with “Boss Battle” challenges that test the student’s understanding. To keep students motivated, Maivuli includes gamification features such as Stars, XP, Coins, subject levels, avatars, and an Avatar Shop. Students can track their progress through a visual Progress Map, earn rewards for completing lessons, and personalize their learning experience.
MaiVuli — A gamified learning platform
MaiVuli is one of my passion projects, created from the idea that learning should feel structured, motivating, and enjoyable for students. The platform is designed as a gamified educational Learning Management System for students in Fiji from Year 9 to Year 13, with a focus on making core school subjects easier to follow and more engaging to study.
The idea for Maivuli came from a personal observation. I noticed my nieces struggling with their schoolwork, so I asked them a simple question: would they be more interested in studying if schoolwork felt more like a game? Their answer was yes. That conversation became the spark for the project.
Students today are growing up in a world where social media apps are carefully designed to capture attention, reward quick interaction, and keep users engaged. Because of that, many students struggle to stay focused on traditional schoolwork. To a certain extent, I do not blame them. The way digital platforms are designed has changed how young people engage with content. Maivuli was created from the belief that education can learn from those same engagement patterns, but use them for something more meaningful: helping students learn.
The project started very recently, but I have already made strong progress toward a working MVP-style product. The goal is not just to build another online study platform, but to create a learning experience that feels visual, rewarding, and motivating for students who may otherwise find schoolwork difficult or boring.
Maivuli focuses on subjects such as Mathematics, Accounting, Economics, and Computing. Instead of presenting learning content as plain notes or static pages, the platform organizes the student journey into a clear learning structure: Topics, Sub-topics, and Lessons. This allows students to move through content progressively, building their understanding step by step.
A major part of Maivuli is its gamified learning experience. Students begin from a dashboard and navigate through a visual Progress Map. Lessons include mini-quizzes, while full topics conclude with a larger “Boss Battle” challenge. This gives students a sense of achievement and progression as they complete their learning journey.
To encourage consistent study, the platform rewards students with Stars, XP, and Coins. Stars are earned based on lesson quiz performance, XP helps students level up within each subject, and Coins can be spent in the Avatar Shop to customize their personal avatar. These features are designed to make learning feel more rewarding while still keeping the focus on education.
From a technical perspective, Maivuli is built using a modern web development stack. The frontend is developed with Next.js and React using the App Router. PostgreSQL is used as the database, with Drizzle ORM managing the database layer. Authentication is handled using NextAuth, while Tailwind CSS, Vanilla CSS, and Lucide React are used for styling and interface icons.
Maivuli represents my interest in building practical software that can solve real educational problems. It combines my passion for technology, learning, and user experience into a platform that aims to support students in Fiji by making study more interactive, visual, and motivating.
